Our brains are trained to find patterns in random things. A few dots become an image. A strange pattern on burned toast becomes a religious icon (or Elvis).
It’s the whole basis for optical illusions.
Like in this image. Is it a duck? Is it a bunny?

It’s a ducklebunny!!! It was the first step in the creation of an owlbear when the mad wizard was attempting other bird/mammal crossbreeds.
I seriously think half the created monsters in the MM (perytons, sea lions, etc) were created by drunk wizards after a mage faire.
Now that I think about it, are Platypuses in DnD? They seem like they wold fit right in, with bizarre anatomy and poisonous spikes and stuff.
Thought Eaters!
Of course for some Elvis is a religious icon.
Well, when you’re dressed in a white cape and rhinestones, people are bound to make that mistake.
And the fact that people kept seeing him for decades after his death puts in a pretty good case for divine ascension…
Have you noticed that visions of dead people like visions of big foot, the Loch Ness monster, and even UFO’s have waned since their hey day in the late seventies and early eighties?
It’s a shame. I used to like the documentaries where they searched for the monsters. Although, the Search for Truth is a good show as a replacement now.
